KENYA UPDATE

As you may be aware, there have been some issues in Kenya over the past few weeks. There was a period of civil unrest following the Presidential elections on the 27th December.

None of these protests affected our project site in Machakos, which has remained peaceful and calm throughout.

The scenes of demonstrations and confrontations with police which have been frequently screened on international TV networks have been sporadic and isolated, confined to certain parts of Kenya and have not occurred across the whole country. The tourist resorts and wildlife parks have been unaffected and tourists continue to visit these areas without a problem.

We are in reuglar touch with our partners in Kenya, Excellent Development, and everything is continuing as normal in and around Machakos. The Kamba tribe are not involved in any of the disputes and life continues as normal for them.

Nairobi airport is half an hour out of Nairobi (on the Machakos side of Nairobi), there has been no violence in the vicinity of the airport and there are no issues with transportation to Machakos on arrival in Kenya.

Safety is obviously our key priority, but we are completely confident and happy in continuing to offer this project to volunteers.

At times like this it is important to remember that Kenya will, more than ever, be in need of your help and that each donation to Excellent Development will be making a huge impact to keep supporting this project at a time of great need.

The arrival of Kofi Annan to assist as a mediator between both sides is a huge step forward and we are positive that this will result in a settlement between the two parties and a move towards peace in the very near future.
