Malawi is an incredibly poor country. It is estimated that up to seven million people, from a population of 12 million, may be on the edge of famine. Even with these problems though, the country still claims to be the 'Warm heart of Africa'. For once, the hype is true. These amazing people are some of the most welcoming you will ever meet.
As well as supporting the community with a number of projects, the Makuzi Beach Lodge offers volunteers the option of accommodation with a little more luxury. In 1992 when the owners of Makuzi Beach Lodge moved to the area they started supporting the local primary school which was quite small. Since then they have managed to get funding from World Bank to build a new and bigger school and have set-up a number of projects to support the local community including:
Tree-planting project: Over 15,000 trees have been planted in the surrounding areas and 1,000s more are planned to reduce the impact of deforestation. A new tree plot is being planted with 3 stages. One stage is hard wood trees, the second is fruit trees and the third is soft wood trees which are fast growing and can be used for fire wood and building. The project has created employment, raised money for the local community and increased conservation awareness.
School project: Supporting the new school by paying salaries of four teachers, building teacher accommodation, funding stationery and other equipment. Future aims include trying to start a feeding program for children who attend the school.
Basic option: From £1,160 + £200 donation to the Quest Charitable Trust
Luxury option: From £2,220 + £200 donation to the Quest Charitable Trust
Includes all food, accommodation, airport transfers, pre-departure training, in-country support.
The donation to the Quest Charitable Trust can be fundraised and will be used to support the projects at Makuzi Beach.
