The Mangueira favela, settled on hill previously considered un-inhabitable, is home to more than 15,000 people. The Mangueira Social Project has received acclaim for providing a safe and worthwhile outlet for young people in the Mangueira Favela. The Project is home to a number of schools and a well-equipped sport centre and is responsible for coordinating an extensive range of activities within the community. Sadly its special needs children's home is not well funded and the staff are overworked.
It has been estimated that 20% of Rio's population live in favelas yet they remain a mystery for most people. This is a rare opportunity to help to improve the lives of Rio's poorest and at the same time gain a real understanding of the people and culture of the favela.
